white coat

Today was Rob's White Coat Ceremony. It's kind of like graduation, but on the other end of the experience... the beginning of a very very long experience. They were all presented with their white doctor coats. It was really very exciting.
We feel so blessed to be here at Dartmouth. One of the neat things about Dartmouth Medical School is that it's founder, Nathan Smith, was the surgeon who is recognized for saving Joseph Smith's leg by operating rather than amputating after Joseph had Typhoid Fever. In fact, the location of the house that the Smith Family lived in at that time is just down the road of where we live now. There was a really great article in the Deseret News a few months ago about Nathan Smith, and the role he played in preserving Joseph Smith's leg. Apparently there were no other doctors at that time who practiced this procedure. It's just neat for us to be associated in a small way with the founder of the medical school because of our heritage in the church and our testimony of Joseph Smith. As we drive around this beautiful area, it is so easy to picture the young Prophet walking through these fields, maybe climbing over a fence, and disapearing into the thick woods to pray.
