funny thing

The funny thing about taking your baby to get their picture taken is that you think your baby is darling no matter what, no matter the pose or the outfit or the backdrop. This is where it gets tricky. We show up to the Picture People who we've seen do a very cute job with our cousin Zoey and our friend Alec. Maya was totally thrilled for her very first professional photo shoot on her two week birthday. Chris greeted us at the counter. He looked something like this...Only Chris's hair was twice as long and he had lots of facial hair too. Oh - and he reaked. That means he smelled really bad of body odor.
Just the person I want handling my two week, spotless, smelly good baby.
The photo shoot went pretty smoothly, apart from my cringing every time Chris attempted to reposition Maya. "Don't touch my clean baby, you smelly man!" I would scream in my head. And what was he thinking waving the frizzy parrot thing around in front of Maya's face? Hello Chris! She's only two weeks old! Just snap some pictures already! It's a digital camera, right? So don't try and get a newborn baby to smile for you, it's just not going to happen.
So here's where the Picture People get tricky. Within ten minutes of the photo shoot, Chris brings out an entire display of portraits printed, framed, and ready to go. "Do you see any you are happy with?" the innocent B.O. man asks. Are you kidding me? This is my child! My first born baby! My precious little angel who has done no wrong! My adorable sweetheart who I love with all my heart! Of course I see some I like. I see some I LOVE. In fact, I love them all. How can I not? She's my child! But do I have $275.00 to spend on one beautifully framed portrait of my two week old baby? Regrettably no, I do not. But thank you for dangling all those stunning pictures in front of me, I really appreciate it. (Especially since I know you are just going to throw them all away once I leave. The nerve! Throwing pictures of my baby away!)
The best part was when Chris himself expressed how pleased he was with one of the portraits in particular. "I really like the way this one turned out," Carrot Top exclaimed, "Would you mind of we displayed it in our gallery?"
(Well duh, I mean, she's my beautiful child. Of course your happy with the way it turned out.)
"Do we get a discount or free picture or anything?"
"No."
"Oh, okay. I guess that's fine."
I mean, if we can't afford to hang them in our own living room, at least we can visit the Great Mall of New Hampshire any time we want and look at our baby hanging on their wall instead.
P.S. If you do go to Picture People for some photography, be sure to print out a coupon off their website and if you think it's worth it to you, definitely sign up for the club membership they offer.

Oh, that is too funny! I once left the Picture People in tears because the idiot tried to hide the fact that I was 7 or 8 months pregnant (with our second child) in our family Christmas photos. Hello?!?!

There was a time when I couldn't even look at Carrot Top. Does he know that plucked brows and huge muscles don't go well. And the hair? Yuck.

So Maya is famous and at such a young age.

She's so totally cute Melis.

Oh, Melissa! I laughed all the way through this. The first time I left I was heart broken about some of the pictures I knew they were just going to throw in the trash. I was so tempted to wait and dig through their garbage... but I didn't. I'm sorry your guy was smelly. Honestly, I haven't been all that impressed with the photographers but I really like the manager at our Picture People. The photographers don't know how to make my kids smile and play. That's my job. When they try butting in my kids always turn off. I just want to say "Hey man. Just take the pictures. I'll do the rest" Yeah, as cute as they may be on those beautiful white backdrops I think I may be taking pictures myself after this year. :-)

You make me laugh. Oh, the nerve, the nerve. Remember the girl at Sears, though? C'mon, she had to be at least as bad as Mr. Reaky Man. Unfortunately for her, I wasn't silenty screaming in my head - I was just plain rude. But, if you're plain dumb, you get plain rude. Sorry, dude.

She's adorable...and people with B.O. should be working elsewhere...really.

Oh Melissa you make me laugh.

You could fly here for less $ than that and I'll take a gazillion pics :)

Before I started taking them myself i'd just cringe at the people taking the pics. You have to be firm with what you want and how you want them done, or "rude" as Dalene mentioned.

I've told off more than one part time JCP photograpper. Id tell them if you put all that crap in the picture (a gazillion props/back drops) I won't buy the photo... they always wanted to bury the kids in stupid stuffed animals that were ratty.

Bring your own special blankets and stuffies to make the shot special to YOU> :)

Picture People hated me as I'd just get the free 8x10 and walkout. I'm awful.

Maya is just adorable how did 4 weeks go by so fast???

No we do buy some pictures (with the coupons!) but we just can't afford the ones they frame up all beautifully. Instead we just go to Kohls and buy our own frames. ( :
